North-west New England 'leads the way in school apprenticeships'
18/04/2008(5:17 PM)

The number of school-based apprenticeships in north-west New England is on the up, it has emerged.

According to the Armidale Express, there are some 280 school-based training programmes being run across the region, 45 of which are located in the north-west.

NSW senior project manager Greg Poetschka told the news provider that training schemes such as these are vital in reducing the skills shortage and providing opportunities for young people to enter their chosen workforce.

"These students still attend school whilst commencing their apprenticeship, working one day a week and gaining quality training and experience in their home towns and eventually employment," he continued.

This follows news that the Australian federal government will seek to address the nation's skills shortage through higher education policies.

In a speech at the Higher Education HR conference in Sydney, employment participation minister Brendan O'Connor claimed that a government review will look to create high performance institutions and improve the sector's contribution to increase economic productivity and labour market participation.
