PM declares war on unemployment
12/11/2008(1:33 PM)

The Australian prime minister claims he is going to war over jobs during the credit crisis, it has been reported.

Kevin Rudd maintains his administration will create tens of thousands of new jobs in a "war against unemployment" in the country, according to the Australian.

Speaking in parliament on Monday (November 10th), the prime minister said a $10.4 billion economic package announced last month will create 75,000 jobs over the course of the next 12 months.

"It is important … to embark upon a war against unemployment because, if we look at what is happening around the world, we see rising jobless data in many of the developed countries," Mr Rudd explained.

He added that unemployment in the US is currently at 6.5 per cent, compared with 5.7 per cent in the UK, eight per cent in France and 7.5 per cent in Germany.

Meanwhile, the Lithgow Mercury reported this week that the government of New South Wales has announced an $85 million package to crate jobs across the region.
