'More focus on leadership development needed'
23/05/2008(5:07 PM)

Australian organisations need to do more to develop the leadership abilities of younger employees, experts have claimed.

According to Money Management, Michael Baldwin, chief executive of the Fund Executive Association, has asserted that the current skills shortage has increased the need for employers to concentrate on leadership, coaching and mentoring schemes in order to attract and retain high-quality staff.

"Employees are not just interested in earning money, they want to be motivated by inspiring leaders and to be challenged in an environment that supports creativity and innovation," he said.

Meanwhile, leadership consultant Avril Henry has called for the baby boom generation, which holds the majority of senior company positions in Australian companies, to gain a better understanding of what motivates younger staff.

"As employers, baby boomers need to understand how to recruit and retain good people," she remarked.

Their comments follow a recent report from Deloitte which called for companies to adopt a business-wide talent management programme - rather than one led purely by human resources - to cope with the shifting needs of employees, Management Issues reports.
