3/07/2008(4:34 PM)

GameStop has announced that it is set to purchase New Zealand's largest independent gaming chain The Gamesman.

The purchase by the world's largest video game and entertainment software retailer will expand its presence in Australia to a total of 308 stores.

All the details of the agreement have yet to be agreed and the deal is expected to close in the next few weeks.

GameStop currently runs over 4,440 shops worldwide and claims to continuously drive its recruitment process and offer extensive job opportunities across the company.

Phil McPhee, general manager of The Gamesman, said the company would "like to thank" staff and customers "for their support".

"This move will enhance the service and experience for customers, and our staff will benefit from the support structure and career opportunities available through GameStop," he added.

GameStop recently announced earnings of US$1.81 billion in the first quarter of 2008, which is a 151 per cent rise in revenue year-on-year, reports Detroit Free Press.
