'Job vacancies have risen'
27/06/2008(5:06 PM)

The number of job vacancies across the county rose by 2.5 per cent in the three months to May, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has revealed.

According to the organisation, the number of available jobs in May also represented a 9.4 per cent increase year-on-year.

The ABS said May saw 184,400 jobs in the public and private sectors that needed to be filled immediately.

CommSec equities economist Savanth Sebastian told news.com.au that employers need to offer incentives if they are to retain staff and recruit new workers in the tight jobs market.

"It is a challenge to attract and retain staff and it's not going to get any easier,'' he said.

The ACT had the largest job vacancy increase (15.2 per cent) followed by Queensland (eight per cent) and Victoria (6.4 per cent).

Job vacancies rose most in the property and business services sectors with 50,200 jobs available, compared to the three months February.
